ADHD care at different ages

Adults (18+)

Review attention, organization, time management, impulsivity and the effects of symptoms at work, home or school. The assessment includes relevant childhood history, health screening and functional impairment.

Adolescents (13–17)

Explore symptoms across school, home and social settings, with developmentally appropriate questions and caregiver input when appropriate. Privacy, consent and decision-making capacity are considered individually.

Children (6–12)

Assess developmental history, school and home functioning, sleep, learning, behaviour and medical factors. Parent or guardian history and teacher or school collateral are commonly important.

How the assessment process works

  1. Book an initial assessment. Choose the appropriate age-based appointment and confirm you are physically located in Alberta for virtual care.
  2. Complete secure intake forms. Jane questionnaires are tailored to the patient's age; caregivers may need to provide developmental history and collateral information.
  3. Meet virtually with a Nurse Practitioner. Discuss symptoms, functional impact, relevant medical and mental health history, and alternative or coexisting conditions.
  4. Review findings and next steps. A separate diagnostic review may be recommended if additional clinical assessment or information is required.
  5. Plan follow-up care. Recommendations may include education, practical strategies, school or workplace supports, therapy referrals and medication when clinically appropriate.
Clinical note: Completing forms or booking an assessment does not guarantee an ADHD diagnosis or a prescription. Additional records, collateral history, investigations or in-person assessment may be needed.

Virtual ADHD care in Alberta: common questions

Can an ADHD assessment be completed virtually?

Many components can be assessed virtually, but suitability depends on the patient's circumstances and clinical needs. The clinician may request in-person measurements, additional collateral information or an in-person assessment.

Are parents or teachers involved for younger patients?

Caregiver developmental history and information from school or other settings are often important for children and adolescents. Consent and confidentiality requirements are considered for each patient.

Does an assessment guarantee medication?

No. Medication decisions depend on diagnostic findings, medical history, safety, monitoring requirements and applicable provincial prescribing rules.

Is the appointment publicly insured?

Tersalus offers private ADHD services. Confirm the current fees, what each stage includes, and whether a private charge is permitted for your specific service and circumstances before booking. Provincial coverage and private-billing rules vary.

Do I need to be in Alberta?

Virtual-care eligibility is based in part on where you are physically located at the time of the appointment. Confirm your location, identity, and service eligibility with the clinic before proceeding.
